UN REGARD NOIR
With this series of portraits, I wanted to do justice to the Black man, so rarely or only anecdotally depicted in classical painting.
During often chance encounters, I had models pose first in front of my camera, then very quickly in front of my video camera.
During these posing sessions, I asked them to talk about what saddened or angered them, similar to the setup I designed for the "Dancing Portraits":
"Tell me the worst thing that happened to you" or
"Tell me what makes you the angriest"...
As they spoke, the model relived the emotion that flashed through their eyes.
I then chose the frame that best reflected the desired expression. I reworked it extensively using a wide range of digital and traditional techniques.
I also sometimes found images online that exactly matched my search. Here is the result of seven years of work, presented here in chronological order.
